How to get into medical school.
A practical UK guide to choosing strategically, preparing for UCAT, reflecting on experience and interviewing like a thoughtful future colleague—not a rehearsed applicant.
Build a shortlist you can defend.
The strongest application strategy is not ‘apply to the best schools’. It is to identify schools whose published selection methods fit your evidence, circumstances and priorities.
Academic fit
Check subjects, achieved or predicted grades, resit policy and GCSE scoring—not just the headline offer.
Selection fit
Understand how each school uses UCAT, contextual information, interview and the personal statement.
Course fit
Compare standard entry, graduate entry and gateway routes, then teaching style and placement pattern.
Life fit
Include location, travel, accommodation, support, placement geography and the cost of living.
Work backwards from the deadline.
For 2027 entry, the official UCAT cycle runs through summer 2026 and the medicine UCAS deadline is 15 October 2026. Put the fixed dates in first; plan preparation around them.
- 20 May: UCAT account registration opens.
- 23 June: UCAT booking opens.
- 13 July: testing starts.
- 10 September: access-arrangement application deadline.
- 16 September: booking deadline.
- 24 September: final test day and bursary deadline.
- 15 October: UCAS medicine application deadline.
Train the process, then the pace.
UCAT is not a memory contest. Start by understanding each subtest, then practise accurately without time pressure, and only then make timing and decision discipline part of every session.
Weeks 1–2
Use the official tour and tutorials. Learn the interface, question families and your recurring errors.
Weeks 3–4
Build timed sets. Keep an error log that separates misunderstanding, strategy and time-pressure errors.
Weeks 5–6
Use official question banks and full practice tests under realistic conditions. Review more than you test.
Final days
Protect sleep, rehearse logistics and avoid changing your whole method because of one poor mock.
A useful error log asks: What did I miss? Why did I miss it? What rule will I use next time? How will I recognise this pattern sooner?
Reflection beats collection.
Medical schools do not need a trophy cabinet of placements. They want evidence that you have explored caring work honestly and can explain what you learned about patients, teams, communication and yourself.
- Describe one specific moment rather than a vague week of ‘shadowing’.
- Separate what you observed from what you were personally responsible for.
- Explain what changed in your understanding or behaviour.
- Connect the learning to the realities of studying and practising medicine.
- Respect confidentiality: never include identifiable patient detail.
Give each section one job.
The UCAS personal statement now uses three structured questions. Do not write the same paragraph three times. Make each answer add a different piece of evidence.
Why this subject?
Your informed motivation, what you understand about medicine and why that work suits you.
How have studies prepared you?
Relevant knowledge and, more importantly, the ways you learned to reason, communicate and persist.
What else have you done?
Experience, service, employment and responsibilities—interpreted rather than listed.
Final edit
Check that every claim has evidence and every example answers “so what?”
Many medical schools do not directly score the statement, but some use it at interview or to explore professionalism and motivation. Write something you can discuss honestly.
Think aloud without performing.
A good interview answer is structured but not robotic. It notices the people affected, identifies uncertainty, explains a safe course of action and reflects on limits.
- Motivation: medicine’s rewards and difficulties, supported by lived evidence.
- Communication: listen, clarify, acknowledge emotion and adapt.
- Ethics: identify stakeholders and competing principles before reaching a proportionate view.
- Teamwork: your contribution, the tension, what changed and what you learned.
- Insight: know the course, the profession and your own development needs.
Submit the application you can stand behind.
Before you press submit, make one clean evidence sheet for each choice and ask whether the application is accurate, current and authentically yours.
- Requirements checked on each university’s current website.
- Contextual eligibility and any separate forms checked.
- UCAT score considered using the school’s stated method—not internet folklore.
- Three personal-statement answers complement rather than repeat one another.
- Dates, qualifications and experience details verified.
- A trusted reader has checked clarity without replacing your voice.
